The Circle Line Finally Closes Its Loop: What CCL6 Means for Marina Bay and Bayfront
On 12 July 2026, the Circle Line became an actual circle. The three new CCL6 stations Keppel, Cantonment and Prince Edward Road opened for passenger service, closing the gap between HarbourFront on the west and Marina Bay on the east. The completed line now spans 39 kilometres across 33 stations, with 12 interchange stations connecting to every other MRT line in Singapore. For visitors to Marina Bay, Bayfront and Gardens by the Bay, the practical effect is shorter, transfer-free rides from the west of the island, and a more resilient Circle Line that no longer dead-ends at two terminus stations.
The LTA's 24 June 2026 news release confirmed the public preview on 4 July 2026, themed "Where Journeys Come Full Circle", which let commuters walk through all three new stations and ride free shuttle trains between Marina Bay and the CCL6 stations before opening. The actual passenger-service launch followed on 12 July. From that date, trains run at about 2-minute frequencies on the main loop during peak hours, and about 4 minutes between Dhoby Ghaut, Promenade, Bayfront and Marina Bay. Off-peak and weekend frequencies average 5 to 6 minutes.
Why Marina Bay is now the more useful terminus
Before CCL6, the Circle Line ran in a horseshoe from Dhoby Ghaut in the north, through the city and east to Marina Bay, then arcing west through Paya Lebar, Serangoon and Bishan to HarbourFront. Marina Bay was a dead-end. To get from HarbourFront to Marina Bay you rode the whole horseshoe, or you switched to the North-South or North East Line and transferred. The closure of the loop changes the geometry: HarbourFront and Marina Bay are now connected by a short direct arc through Keppel, Cantonment and Prince Edward Road, cutting roughly 10 minutes off the Telok Blangah to Marina Bay journey that previously required transfers between the CCL, NEL and NSL.
For Bayfront visitors specifically, this matters in two ways. First, anyone arriving from the west side of Singapore, Pasir Panjang, Kent Ridge, Telok Blangah, HarbourFront or the future Cantoment area can now ride the Circle Line direct to Bayfront (CE1) without transferring at Dhoby Ghaut or Buona Vista. Second, the Circle Line is now resilient to single-section closures: a problem on one side of the loop can be bypassed by riding the other way round. This is particularly relevant given that the Downtown Line is operating on a reduced weekend timetable through 5 September 2026, and the Circle Line is now the cleaner alternative from the city to Bayfront.
What the three new stations are for
The three CCL6 stations are not interchange hubs, they are local-access stations filling in a gap on the southwestern waterfront. Cantonment sits next to the former Tanjong Pagar Railway Corridor and is the station for the Knackstop pop-up merchandise store that ran during the 4 July preview. Keppel serves the Keppel area and the future Keppel Club redevelopment. Prince Edward Road is the intermediate station, close to the Cantonment Road corridor and the city-side end of the new loop segment.
None of these three are likely to be the daily station for a Bayfront visitor, but they change the routing maths for anyone coming from the southwest. The LTA's own example is the Telok Blangah to Marina Bay journey, which previously required three lines and is now a single train. The same logic applies to anyone from HarbourFront, Labrador Park or Pasir Panjang.
The 4 July public preview and what happened there
Before the 12 July opening, the LTA ran a one-day public preview on 4 July 2026 from 9.30am to 9.00pm. Free shuttle trains ran between Marina Bay and Prince Edward Road at 6 to 8 minute intervals, and between Prince Edward Road, Cantonment and Keppel at 10 minute intervals. The preview included a stamp rally, a photo hunt for circles in and around the stations, a Knackstop pop-up store at Cantonment with exclusive commemorative merchandise, and booths on the Land Transport Master Plan Refresh, SimplyGo, the National Heritage Board and the Singapore Civil Defence Force's civil-defence shelter features inside the stations.
The preview was the only chance to ride the CCL6 stretch for free and walk the stations without through-train connectivity to the rest of the CCL. From 12 July, the CCL6 stations are integrated into the main Circle Line, and normal fares apply. The commemorative Knackstop merchandise was a one-day-only item and is not being restocked.
What it means for your Marina Bay routing now
If you are planning a visit to Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay, the Flower Dome or the Helix Bridge from 12 July 2026 onwards, the routing advice is now simpler. From the west and southwest of Singapore, take the Circle Line direct to Bayfront or Marina Bay without planning a transfer at Dhoby Ghaut or HarbourFront. From the east, the Circle Line through Paya Lebar, Mountbatten, Stadium and Nicoll Highway now arcs through to Bayfront and Marina Bay on a single line. From the north, the CCL interchanges with the North-South Line at Bishan, the North East Line at Serangoon, the Downtown Line at Botanic Gardens, Serangoon and Bayfront, and the Thomson-East Coast Line at Stevens, Caldecott and Marina Bay.
The one caveat is frequency on the section between Dhoby Ghaut, Promenade, Bayfront and Marina Bay. The LTA's release notes a 4-minute peak frequency on this segment, compared with 2 minutes on the main loop, so the city-side section remains slightly less dense. LTA and SMRT have said they will monitor loadings and adjust as operations bed in. For now, the headline is that the Circle Line is finally a loop, and Bayfront is on a connected orbital line for the first time.
