NDP 2026 Rehearsal Road Closures: Getting to Esplanade and Marina Bay on Rehearsal Saturdays
From 27 June to 9 August 2026, every Saturday evening around the Esplanade, Marina Bay waterfront and the Padang area sees road closures and bus diversions for the National Day Parade rehearsal season. Esplanade itself carries a standing advisory on its visitor page that "road closures in the vicinity of Esplanade for National Day Parade Rehearsals" run through this whole period. For anyone with a show booking at Esplanade, a dinner at the Marina Bay waterfront, or a walk along the Helix Bridge on a Saturday between late June and National Day, the closure window is roughly 5pm to 11pm and it shifts traffic, bus routes and taxi pick-up points across the area.
This is a separate question from the NDP fireworks themselves, which for 2026 are fired from the Kallang Basin near the National Stadium, not Marina Bay. The rehearsal-closure issue is about surface access: how you actually get to Esplanade Drive, the Padang, the Promontory or the Marina Bay waterfront when the roads around them are shut for a rehearsal at the National Stadium and the supporting parade precinct.
The rehearsal calendar that triggers closures
The 2026 rehearsal and show calendar, confirmed by the NDP organising committee and the Singapore Police Force traffic advisories, runs across nine Saturdays plus the actual National Day on Sunday 9 August. The road closures around Esplanade and Marina Bay are tied to the rehearsals and previews that use the Padang as the parade venue, which is why the Esplanade advisory specifically covers the 27 June to 9 August window.
- Combined Rehearsal 1 (CR1): Saturday 27 June 2026
- Combined Rehearsal 2 (CR2): Saturday 4 July 2026
- National Education 1 (NE1): Saturday 11 July 2026
- National Education 2 (NE2): Saturday 18 July 2026
- Preview 1: Saturday 25 July 2026
- Preview 2: Saturday 1 August 2026
- NDP 2026: Sunday 9 August 2026
The SPF's CR1 and CR2 traffic advisories confirm the closure pattern: Nicoll Highway, Stadium Boulevard, Stadium Crescent and Stadium Walk are closed to vehicular traffic during the stipulated periods, with access granted only to authorised and emergency vehicles. The closures primarily affect the vicinity of the Padang, Raffles City, Suntec City, Esplanade Drive and Bayfront Avenue. Parking restrictions along the affected roads are strictly enforced, and auxiliary police, security officers and SAF marshals are deployed at affected junctions.
Which bus services are diverted
On the rehearsal Saturdays, SBS Transit diverts six bus services off their usual routes through the closure zone: Bus 10, Bus 11, Bus 14, Bus 16, Bus 70/70M and Bus 196. These services continue running, but they bypass certain roads surrounding the National Stadium and skip selected bus stops within the closure area. The skipped stops include Kallang Squash Centre, opposite Kallang Squash Centre, opposite Carpark F, Stadium MRT Station, Carpark F and opposite Singapore Indoor Stadium.
For visitors to the Esplanade and Marina Bay waterfront, the more relevant diversions are the ones on Bayfront Avenue and Raffles Avenue. If your usual bus route uses those roads on a Saturday evening, expect it to be redirected through Temasek Avenue or Nicoll Highway, with a longer walk from the drop-off point to the Esplanade theatre or the Helix Bridge. The cleanest approach is to check the MyTransport.SG app or SBS Transit socials on the Friday before each affected Saturday, as the per-rehearsal advisory lists the exact temporary stops.
The MRT workaround
For most visitors, the MRT is the fastest way through the closure zone. Esplanade MRT (CC3) sits directly under the Esplanade theatre and is unaffected by the road closures. Promenade MRT (CC4/DT15) is a short walk to the Helix Bridge and Bayfront. Bayfront MRT (CE1/DT16) is the station for Marina Bay Sands and the Event Plaza. Stadium MRT (CC6) is the closest station to the National Stadium if you are attending the rehearsal itself. The Circle Line runs normally through all of these on rehearsal Saturdays, and the Downtown Line runs normally except for the separately scheduled Friday-night and Saturday-morning DTL works that run 10 July to 5 September 2026.
The practical advice from the Esplanade advisory and the SPF traffic notices is consistent: use public transport, plan to arrive earlier than usual, and expect taxi and ride-hail pick-up points to be moved further from the closure zone. Ride-hail and taxis continue to operate in the vicinity, but waiting times and fares typically surge during the evening peak as rehearsal crowds leave. If you have an Esplanade show booking at 7.30pm or 8pm on a rehearsal Saturday, aim to arrive by 6.30pm at the latest, as the road closures start taking effect from 5pm and traffic builds quickly around the Suntec and Raffles City area.
What is different about 2026 specifically
Two things distinguish the 2026 rehearsal season from previous years. First, the parade itself is back at the National Stadium and the Padang, after a stretch at the Floating Platform, which means the closure footprint stretches from Kallang through to the Padang and the Esplanade waterfront rather than being confined to one venue. Second, the 2026 fireworks are fired from the Kallang Basin near the National Stadium, not from Marina Bay, so the rehearsal Saturdays do not produce a Marina Bay fireworks show. Free public viewing of the rehearsal fireworks is at Stadium Riverside Walk, the Lawn at Kallang, Marina Barrage and Bay East Garden, not at the Esplanade waterfront.
For Esplanade and Marina Bay visitors specifically, the implication is that rehearsal Saturdays are quieter on the waterfront itself, with the closure inconvenience but without the fireworks crowds. The exception is 9 August itself, when the actual NDP and the citywide fireworks bring the largest crowds of the year to the Marina Bay waterfront.
